Jorge Mataix MD, PhD.

Vitreo-retinal surgeon, Medical Retina and Intraocular Tumor Specialist.

He completed his ophthalmology residency in La Fe University Hospital (Valencia, Spain) from 2002 to 2006. Consultant of vitreoretinal and Intraocular Tumors Unit at FISABIO ophthalmology (FOM) since 2006 and Instituto de la Retina Valencia since 2011. Founding member of the Spanish Group of Ocular Oncology (GEOO). He completed his doctoral thesis in 2007 about Age-related macular degeneration: treatment with Photodynamic Therapy with verteporfin. In 2014 he obtained the title of "European Board of Ophthalmology". He has presented more than 70 communications in national meetings and more than 20 in international meetings. He has published over 20 scientific papers in international journals and has written more than 20 book chapters. He has participated in more than 25 clinical trials / research projects. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Spanish Society of Ophthalmology, Spanish Retina-Vitreous Society, Spanish Group of Ocular Oncology and the Ophthalmological Society of the Valencian Community.

Beatriz Abadía MD, PhD.

Vitreo-retinal surgeon.

Dr. Abadía is founder of Retina Academy as well as a board certified ophthalmologist who specializes in medical and surgical disorders of the retina and vitreous. Her surgical interests include retinal detachment, macular holes, epiretinal membranes and diabetic retinopathy.

She earned her medical degree from University of Zaragoza, Spain. She completed her ophthalmology residency at Miguel Servet University Hospital. She completed her medical and surgical vitreoretinal fellowship at FISABIO (Valencia, Spain).

Dr. Abadía is a member of the Spanish Vitreo Retinal Society (SERV). She is an author of over 20 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters. Her clinical work currently takes place at Clinica Baviera in Zaragoza, Spain,

She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Sanitas prize for the best Resident Medical Intern in the country and the best Resident Medical Intern in Aragón (Spain).

M Carmen Desco MD, PhD.

Vitreo-retinal Surgeon.

Consultant of vitreo-retina unit at FISABIO Oftalmología médica (FOM Valencia since 2005 and at INSTITUTO DE LA RETINA Valencia since 2011. Teaching coordinator and resident tutor at FOM since 2005. Associate lecturer of Ophthalmology at CEU-Cardenal Herrera University Valencia since 2017. She has completed 2 master's degrees to complete her training. Winner of 2 research grants and recently the SERV senior grant 2018 for a training observership in retinal surgery with Prof. Ferrenc Kuhn. She has directed 4 doctoral theses. Participated in 16 public funded research projects and 28 clinical trials. Peer review papers in ORCID number orcid.org/0000-0002-9239-7847.

Amparo Navea MD, PhD.

Vitreo-retinal Surgeon.

I was trained as an ophthalmologist through the MIR system in the Ophthalmology Service of the La Fe University Hospital in Valencia. I completed my training in various hospitals in Spain (Barcelona and Madrid) and abroad: Paris, Frankfurt, New York, and Cleveland, among others. When I finished the residency, I joined the staff of the La Fe ophthalmology and developed my professional work there until December 2004.

Since January 2005 I have been the Medical Director of the Mediterranean Ophthalmology Foundation, being also the head of the Retina Unit of this center. In July 2013, the Foundation merged with a larger one and changed its name to FISABIO Oftalmología Medica, I was its director until May 2017, combining management tasks with work in the Retina Unit. I have been a professor of Ophthalmology and in charge of the signature Skin and Organs of the Senses at the CEU-Cardenal Herrera University at its headquarters in Valencia and Castellón until September 2020. In 2011 we inaugurated the Retina Institute. Although we treat many types of ocular pathologies, we have special dedication to retina patients. I have been a principal investigator in numerous projects and clinical trials, I have published more than 50 articles in prestigious national and foreign journals, written books and book chapters within ophthalmology, I am a member of several scientific societies, annually I attend scientific Congresses of my specialty, actively participating in them.

Pilar Calvo MD, PhD

Medical Retina Specialist.

Dr. Calvo is founder of Retina Academy as well as Medical Retina Specialist board certified in Canada and Europe. She is a recognized expert in the treatment of macular degeneration, diabetes, retinal vascular disease an intraocular tumors.

She has published over 30 scientific papers and several book chapters. Dr. Calvo is the recipient of numerous awards, including the prestigious Arruga Award (Best Spanish Ophthalmologist under 40).

She completed her ophthalmology residency in Zaragoza (Spain). In 2012, she completed a 1-year clinical fellowship with Dr. Michael Brent at University of Toronto (Toronto Western Hospital, Mount Sinai Hospital and Princess Margaret Cancer Center).

In addition to her clinical work at Miguel Servet University Hospital and Clinica Baviera in Zaragoza, Spain, Dr. Calvo serves as an investigator on several international clinical trials. She is a member of the Spanish Vitreo-Retinal Society (SERV).
